Happy Lunar New Year Everyone!!!!
Background:
The tradition of celebrating the Lunar New Year came to Vietnam from our Chinese neighbors. Along with many other Asian cultures, both the Chinese & Vietnamese recognize the Lunar calendar as part of their cultural tradition.
Têt Nguyen Dan literally means the first morning of the first day of the new period. More simply known as "Têt," it is Vietnam's version of the Lunar New Year.
Têt is normally the biggest and most important holiday in the Vietnamese culture, almost like New Year's Day, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, and Christmas all rolled into one. It's a holiday that is based on history but has also evolved into a modern celebration that incorporates new elements to produce new traditions.
What real grocery shopping is like...
Múa Lân (Dance of the Lion/Dragon):
During the Têt festival a Múa Lân, (frequently referred to as a unicorn but looks more like a cross between a lion and a dragon) who is the traditional symbol of strength in Vietnamese culture, is paraded around to scare away evil spirits.

A Dirty New Year:
If you didn't know there are 12 animal signs associated with the Lunar Calendar. Several years ago my sisters devised the Dirty Lunar Symbol Guide:
1) Figure out which animal sign you are here
2) Just add the word dirty in front of your sign
Rat + Dirty = Dirty Rat
Pig + Dirty = Dirty Pig
