  • Event Recap:

    Choc Fair
    Sunday, March 7th

    Background:

Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) is one of two hospitals in Orange County that exclusively serves infants, children and adolescents.

CHOC, founded in 1964, is a 202-bed, tertiary-level hospital located in the city of Orange. With a medical staff of more than 500 physicians, CHOC offers nearly every pediatric specialty and provides a full spectrum of healthcare services ranging from prevention programs for healthy children to the most advanced medical care for those with serious illnesses.

    Personal Reasons:

This event had special meaning to me because my twin brother went to CHOC Hospital for about 5 years, while he was living in Orange County.

I’ll elaborate more about my brothers situation at a later date but today is a happy day meant for the children.

    Choco Fair:

Well earlier today my roomate Patrick, Phil, Kim & Hoang headed out to the Choc Hospital to help participate in a fair they were having for some of the young patients out in the cancer wing.

The children got to play several games, eat food, & get their faces painted.  Another highlight of the day was that the official mascot of Choc Hospital went around to say hi and play with all the little kids.

If you notice he has a bandage on his left hand so kids can relate.

All the kids flocked to Choco Bear when he came.

He even had time to play some games.

What the hell did we do?

The event actually had over 50 volunteers so we spent the first 30 minutes trying to figure out what to do while all the other volunteers were happy manning booths and playing with the children.

Lucky for us, Patrick knew the organizers of the event and they let us take turns dressing up in the Choco Bear Costume.

Patrick was a natural and all the kids loved him.

Phil, on the other hand, is like a foot taller than Patrick and scared all the kids.

Kim did a great job also but we kept on leading her into walls.

    What about Lan?

My feet were too big for the costume so I didn’t get a chance to go out and play with the children.  However, I did put the head on and take some pictures….

Raise the roof…..hahahah that’s so 5 years ago

    Reflection:

The event was a huge success and anyone in the Orange County, CA area should volunteer at the CHOC hospital at least once in their life time, we really do make a difference…..

    …even more than you know.

  • That’s so sweet that you volunteer at the Children’s Hospital.  My cousin was just at the one in Oklahoma City for a heart valve transplant.  That place is really depressing so it’s great people try to cheer up the kids.  I had to stay there for 3 days when my baby had a kidney infection.

     :throb:Kasey

  • aww thats so cute of you guys!!

  • holy canolies, lanman! talk about missing out–i was looking forward to this last tuesday too. (i got my tooth fixed though). your outing sure as hell looked like a blast though.

  • You obviously don’t sleep.  I can’t believe that at 4AM, you’re the first one to respond to my new post which I put up at a gawd awful hour.  To that, I say thank you.

In other news, I must say that I do admire you heaps for being so committed to volunteerism.  It’s definitely a good thing.

btw good job on ur bear-work. must make the kids happi

  • OMG, that reminds me the one time I was with my little cousin and he saw one of these huge mascots and practically freaked out. When I finally calmed him down, he started hitting the mascot.

  • i so want to wear that costume. same you couldn’t play with the kids.

  • reminds me of that bloody mouthed bear in Akira.  sweet.

  • You’re a great guy for doing an activity like this. The picture with the knife was priceless, I loved it.

  • that last pic is scary!!

ryc: i’ve watched both seven samurai and magnificent seven. they are both classics in their own right even though magnificent seven lifts a lot from seven samurai. (in my earlier entry i mentioned this). the scene that i was talking about when yul brynner and steve mcqueen take bold initiative does not really have a strong analogue in seven samurai.

  • CHOC Fair…

I thought it was more like a Chocolate Fair…

That’s very nice of you guys to volunteer….  :innocent:
